Counseling

In the broadest context, we use the word counseling in the context of helping the client and us assess their personal history/current state, family background and also their "psychological" profile.

It is vital for us as counselors and also for the client to understand their unique, God-given temperament. Temperament is different than personality. To determine our client's temperament, we use a clinical diagnostic tool called the Arno Profile System developed by the National Christian Counselors Association. This is an extremely accurate and valuable tool...click here for more information on Temperament Analysis. We use powerpoint teaching tools to teach the client about their own temperament and explain the different temperament types: Melancholy, Supine, Sanguine, Choleric and Phlegmatic.

Key Issues To Be Addressed
Minimize

Ask yourself the following:

  • If you died today, would you be in heaven? If yes, why would God let you in?
  • How is your walk with God?
  • What is the call of God on your life?
  • What hindrances are in your way to performing the call of God on your life?
  • What issues are you dealing with?
  • What is your family history? Do you see issues in your life that are generational? Sicknesses?
  • What is your current "stress" level?
  • What is your current spiritual condition?
  • Do you truly understand your temperament?  Needs, strengths and weaknesses?  If you are married, do you know your spouses?

We address each one of these important issues during the Counseling Module.  They are vital and foundational to help us help you attain real God-given change in your life!

Marriage Counseling

Our experience is that many couples are dealing with issues that were often in place before the marriage. That is, each person brings "baggage" and many times the root causes go much deeper than poor communications or lack of intimacy.  During the initial interview session, we gather information to help assess these root issues and determine a plan of action.  We help you understand these causes and how they can be resolved.   As with individual counseling, administration of the Arno Profile System  which is the NCCA's temperament analysis tool is often an important part of the counseling process.

Traditional marriage counseling methodologies typically focus on the symptoms ("We don't communicate well" or "We've drifted apart" or "We fight all the time") rather than getting at root issues. The bible makes it clear that there is a divine order of relationship priorities we are to have... firs the Lord, then our children, then ministry/work and everything else. If both are willing, we work to help realign these priorities so that the relationship can get back on track.

Sometimes during the initial interview process, we mutually determine that many of the issues a couple is facing were in fact in place in one or both prior to the marriage.  This is an indicator that strongholds or bondages are present and this may lead to a different course of action that involves deliverance ministry for one or both.   This is determined as a result of the initial session(s) and each situation is different.   We do not try to force our clients down a particular path; rather, which path is best in each situation?  This is addressed early in the process.

Women's Ministry

Many women have been used and abused by men and some have a fear of meeting with a male counselor. We never try to force this issue but do believe that a step in the healing process is for a woman to understand that not all men are bad and there are men they can trust. Accordingly, we do encourage them to consider that option in addition to wanting to meet only with a female counselor. We do recognize that, just as for men, there are some issues that are best dealt with by a counselor of the same sex and that is why we have focused subset of services for women clients. Phyllis Tarbox, MA, is well qualified as a minister, business woman, wife and mother to work in this area. Click here for more information on womens ministry.
